How to make Green Tomato Chutney
2 1/2 lb green tomatoes (1kg)
2 1/2 lb cooking apples (1kg)
2lb onions (900g)
6 large cloves of garlic crushed
1lb raisins (450g)
1lb 6oz soft brown sugar (625g)
Pickling spices (25g) I used coriander seeds and mustard seeds
1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper
2 level dessert spoons ground ginger ( I used fresh ginger)
1/2 tablespoon salt
3 pints of genuine malt vinegar (1.75 liters)
How To:
If you know me you will know I am a little haphazard with my cooking… but I basically did this:
-
chopped up the tomatoes, onions, cooking apples and threw it in a big old pan.
-
Added garlic, stirred it around.
-
Added everything else.
-
Leave for 3.5 hours
That’s it!! I recommend listening to a good podcast while your house fills with the smell of chutney.
The final step is putting it in some old jam jars and leaving it for 3 months before you dig in. Let’s be honest though. I did try some and it was still pretty good.
My mum has been making this chutney my whole life and so its been a staple in our meals. It’s delicious with baked potato and cold meats or add to a sandwich. It makes anything taste pretty great.
All these family favourite recipes my mum wrote in a book she hand-bound herself, so I can make them for my friends and family throughout my life. Thanks, mum - I hope you guys enjoy it!
